St. Jacob's Church

Václav Vratislav's unique Baroque tomb

Info text

Originally built in the Gothic style, the church’s current look dates from its Baroque reconstruction in 1739. The façade of the three naves is dominated by richly sculptured reliefs featuring St. Francis of Assisi, St. Jacob and St. Anthony of Padua, all created in the spirit of Italian Baroque illusionism by Ottavio Most. The main altar’s painting depicts St. Jacob’s martyrdom by Václav Vavřinec Reiner. The side chapel is decorated by the paintings of Petr Brandl, another Czech master of the Baroque.

The highlight in terms of sculpture within the church is Václav Vratislav z Mitrovic’s tomb crafted by the Viennese architect, Fischer from Erlach, and the sculptor Ferdinand Maxmilián Brokof.
An interesting legend states that once a robber had wanted to steal the money given for various charities in the church. However, the hand of the Virgin Mary statue firmly took hold of him until the superior came. The robber’s hand, which was subsequently cut off, still hands on a chain by the door today.
