Info text

Since the oldest times, the square has been a the center of the Old Town. It was, as early as in the 10th century, a marketplace on one the crossroads of European trading thoroughfares. The originally enclosed character of the square with on the different sides the city hall, the Kinský Palace, and the church of Our Lady before Týn, was drastically modified at the very end of the World War II when the north wing of the city hall burned down after being shot at by German tanks. The square witnessed many historical events, for instance the execution of the twenty-seven

leaders of the Estate Revolt after the Battle of the White Mountain in 1620. Crosses embedded into the pavement at the place of the executions remind us of that event. In the beginning of the 20th century, the monument to Master Jan Hus was unveiled, it stood in opposition to the Baroque Mariánský Pillar, which was, however, brought down during the boisterous celebrations of the declaration of the independent Czechoslovak Republic in 1918. Today the square is the centre of the every-year Christmas and Easter markets, as well as political demonstrations or other events.
