This is one of the largest squares in Prague, also called "Prague Hyde Park" because it is the only place in the Czech Republic that allows public assemblies without previous reporting.
In fact, the square was created landscaping and expanding the area in 1896 when the renovation of Podskalí took place. That was a very old lumberjack village built in medieval times. Its residents used to make a living rafting and selling wood. The village
even competed with the Old Town for a long time. In the end, during the expansion of Prague in the late 19th century, it was renovated at the same time as the embankment was built against floods. That led to the expansion of the area and the creation of the Palacký Square. The square was known also because the first public transport route of the Prague Horse Railroad between the Jirásek Square and the Palacký Square in 1883.
