Info text

The Baroque Šternberský Palace at Hradčanské Square was built for Count Václav Vojtěch of Šternberk and his wife Klára of Maltzan. The horizontal layout was designed by Domenico Martinelli after the year 1697, originally it was thought that the construction would be extended all the way to Hradčanské Square. The participation of architect Kryštof Dientzenhofer is documented, and so is that of Giovanni Battista Alliprandi in the final phases. In 1811,

the palace was bought from Leopold of Šternberk by the Patriotic Friends of Art Association. In 1819, the modification for for gallery purposes was completed. The collections of the Association were made accessible to the public in 1814.
The National Gallery in Prague, which is a direct successor of the mentioned Patriotic Friends of Art Association, in 1946, made the exhibition of Old European Art a part of its collections accessible to the public.
