Church of St. Havel

Symbiosis between Gothic and Baroque
Significant photo
Description

This church is, for the Czech Land, unusually dedicated to St Havel, it represents, since the beginning of the 14th century the heart of the historical quarter bearing the same name. The significance of the church was enhanced when Emperor Charles the Fourth donated the remains of St. Havel to the church in 1353. A Gothic triple-nave basilica hides

behind the Baroque facade, which used to be dominated by two towers at the western end. The Baroque architectural modifications were completed in the beginning of the 18th century and they were most likely carried out by builder Pavel Ignác Bayer. Inside the church, in the Karmelská Chapel, was buried Karel Škréta, famous bBroque painter.
