Deers Trench

A trench between Prague Castle and Royal Garden
Info text

A natural trench through which flows the Brusnice brook, it stretches along the north side of the Prague Castle. The trench was originally used mostly as a natural defensive barrier for the Prague Castle. During the reign of Emperor Rudolf the Second, big game was kept here, which was later hunted. Over the Deers Trench there used to be a bridge called

"Prašný Most" (Powder Bridge), which connected the Royal Garden to the Prague Castle. During the reign of Empress Maria Theresa, the bridge was replaced with a bulk stone dam, dividing the moat into the upper and the lower part. In 2002, both parts of the Deers Trench were again connected by a tunnel, which was designed by architect Josef Pleskot.
