Historically, the chief Czech land trustees were an especially important institution of administrative authority. The trustees would represent the king in his absence, functioning as the ruling authority. They could even make decisions involving capital punishment, testified to the execution site installed in the palace’s

courtyard. Jan of Lobkowicz had the trustees’ site within the Prague castle complex erected in 1555, under the reign of Ferdinand I. It was built in Renaissance fashion, according to the design of the Italian architect Giovanni Ventura. The building houses uniquely painted interiors dating from the 16th century.
