Info text

The former Baroque Dominican Church of St. Mary Magdalene was built after 1656 following Francesco Caratti´s design for the Order of the Dominicans. The church had a peculiar fate throughout the centuries. In 1793, it was the object of a public auction because of the debts the Dominican monastery had run into. The new owner planned to establish a sugar refinery; however, after many protests, he built only warehouses and offices. The

side naves inside the church were closed and re-floored. Later the building was acquired by the General Post Office, and after 1849 it served as the headquarters of the Military Hospital and Prague Municipal Police.
In 2004, it underwent an expensive reconstruction in order to house the Music Museum. Its unique collections, part of the permanent exhibition as well as short-term exhibitions depict the development of Czech music.
