Riding Statue of St. George

*
A unique Gothic bronze sculpture
Info text

The bronze riding statue of St. George, stabbing the dragon with a spear, situated in the third courtyard of the Prague Castle is a unique piece of Gothic metal casting. There is uncertainty concerning the age of the statue, even if the year 1373 is mentioned, the name of the author is uncertain too. It was thought that the statue had been designed and casted by the brothers Jiří and Martin

of Kluž. However, it is more likely to be the work of the construction and sculpture ironworks of Petr Parléř, who worked for the Emperor Charles the Fourth on the construction of St. Vitus Cathedral.
The current place and method of installation of the statue was chosen by castle architect Josip Plečnik, in order to form a harmonious set with the tall granite monolith standing close by.
