This exceptionally beautiful street rises sharply from Malá Strana Square towards Prague Castle and forms part of the Royal Road. It is flanked by Baroque palaces with richly decorated façades. Several of these houses have preserved Gothic cellars. The hostorical portions of these houses are interesting with their old-fashioned decorated doors, unloading areas and their historical house signs. The Strahov Gate stood in the middle of this street until 1711 with its spirelet and falling bridge. Under the reign of Přemysl II,
it comprised part of the fortification system and separated Malá Strana from Hradčany. The lower portion of the street was inhabited by craftsmen who made spurs. Originally called Strahov Street, Sporen Street has been called Sparrengasse since the second half of the 17th century. The upper portion of the street was called Dlaždění Street. The Czech writer and poet Jan Neruda lived in the well-known house “At the Two Suns,” located in this street. After his death, the street acquired the name of this well-known author.
