Money in Flames

How a greedy man unwittingly endowed the poor
Info text

Long ago, when the deceased still used to be laid to rest in parish churchyards they buried a greedy rich man beside St. Peter’s Church in Poříčí. To the great chagrin of his heirs a large amount of jewelry and coins disappeared without a trace after his death. After some time people noticed that a yellowish flame appeared above the greedy man’s grave every midnight. The churchyard’s old gravedigger quickly figured that the flame’s yellow color denotes a hidden golden treasure. He spoke with his son, the parish clerk at St. Peter’s, but warned him that were they to dig for the treasure they must first obtain a large rosary with seventy-two Paternosters and thirty

Hail Marys. They must then skillfully toss the rosary onto the grave so that it catches the flame and prevents it from blocking their digging. At midnight both arrived at the greedy man’s grave and the old gravedigger caught the flame with great skill. They then dug down to the greedy man’s coffin and in a pillow under his head found the jewelry and coins that had disappeared. The greedy man remained greedy to his death and tried to take his amassed gold with him into the grave. Nevertheless, the old gravedigger and the parish clerk then made use of his treasure for the poor and so the greedy man, unawares, endowed the poor with his tightly guarded wealth.
