The Vítkov Hill towering over the Prague quarter called Žižkov, has its name after Hussite commander Jan Žižka of Trocnov. His troops here, on July 14th 1420, defeated in a spectacular way the Crusader soldiers. The event is commemorated by a giant riding statue of the famous Hussite commander.
Between 1929 and 1932, the National Monument was built on top of the hill in a pure Functionalist style following architect Jan Zázvorka´ plans. The main purpose of the monument was to
honor the memory of the Czech legionnaires and the Czech resistance movement during the period of World War I (1914 - 1918). Under the Communist regime between 1954 and 1962, the monument was transformed into a mausoleum to the first Communist President Klement Gottwald. The entire monument is in the Socialist Realism style. After the fall of the Communist regime, the remains of the Communist leaders were removed and discussions started as to how to use the building further.
