After 1577, financed by Mordechai Maisel, provost of the Jewish Town, a synagogue in Renaissance style was built parallel to the neighboring town hall. That is why it is sometimes also called the Town Hall Synagogue. The unusual square shape edifice with Renaissance vaults results from the size and shape of the land which was limited on the eastern side by a public road. After the fire that damaged the synagogue in
1689, the "Vysoká Synagoga" (Tall Synagogue) got its Baroque façade. The last modifications were completed in the 19th century. The Nazis closed the synagogue in 1941 and used it as a warehouse. After World War II, the premises were used as a museum displaying synagogue textiles. Since 1997, after an almost fifty-year interruption, the synagogue serves again as a place of religious cult for the Prague Jewish community.
