Stromovka

Royal Game Preserve
Info text

A former Royal Game Preserve, it is now a popular park in the English style. It is thought that it was founded by King Přemysl Otakar the Second in 1268. The game preserve was improved under the reign of Emperor Rudolf the Second, modifications he ordered were completed in 1584, fishponds were created, as well as the tunnel supplying water from the Vltava to the "Velký Rybník" (Big Fishpond). Since 1804, the Royal Game Preserve

has been accessible to the public and transformed into the park today called Stromovka. It is in the 19th century that the fishponds were filled up and the current meadows and forested areas planted. There are many varieties of exotic tree species and garden plants making the Royal Game Preserve an important arboretum. The park was flooded in August 2002 and has been subject to extensive renovation work since then.
