The Prague Castle southern Gardens were laid in the 16th century in place of former defense structures of the Prague Castle. Because of the changes in military strategies, the medieval fortifications had lost their strategic importance, the bulwarks were pulled down gradually, and the area was subsequently turned into gardens or vineyards using landfills. The current appearance of the gardens is mostly the work of architect Josip Plečnik, who worked for the first Czechoslovak president TG Masaryk. From the beginning, the gardens were divided into
the "Rajská Zahrada" (Paradise Garden) and the "Zahrada na Valech" (Bulwark Garden). Entrance access to the gardens is possible from the terrace before the first castle courtyard near the New Castle Stairs, or from the opposite side from the view point at Opyš, and from the third courtyard of the castle via the so-called Bull Stairway, which was reconstructed by Josip Plečnik in 1922.
The gardens offer an unforgettable panoramic view of the Lesser Town and the Old Town. During the summer season, the gardens are freely accessible to the public.
