Church of Our Lady of the Snows

*
the tallest church in Prague
Significant photo
Description

The Emperor Charles IV founded this Gothic church and Carmelite Monastery shortly after his coronation in 1347. The church was designed as a three-knave basilica and was meant to be the tallest and largest church in Prague, after the Cathedral of St. Vitus. However, the Hussite Wars interrupted the builders’ efforts and by the end of the 14th century, they only succeeded in building the tall choir stalls. Its vault measures 34 meters high, thus making it the tallest

church in Prague. The barefoot Franciscans obtained the derelict cathedral with its ruined vault at the beginning of the 17th century. They repaired the ruined vault and built a tall façade with a loft for the musicians. The altar depicts the legend of the fonding of the Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome, as the Virgin Mary indicated the place where the basilica was supposed to be established with a thickly-falling snow. The Prague church takes its name from this story.
