The idea to replace the old Vyšehrad Cemetery into the final resting place for the famous personalities of the Czech cultural and political life originated in the seventies of the 19th century. Following the designs of architects Barvitio and Wiehl, an arcade burial ground with marble sepulchers was created alongside the cemetery. The area was called Slavín. Dominant feature of the cemetery, the allegory figure of the winged Genius bowing to the motherland above a symbolic sarcophagus is the work of the sculptor Josef Mauder. There
are allegories of the Mourning Motherland and the Victorious Motherland. Above the plates with the names of the buried is the motto "AČ ZEMŘELI, JEŠTĚ MLUVÍ" (EVEN AFTER THEIR DEATH, THEY ARE STILL TALKING). Approximately six-hundred well-known personalities of importance to the nation are buried at Slavín or inside the Vyšehrad Cemetery: writers, scientists, poets, artists, composers, actors, doctors and politicians. Many monuments are exceptional sculptural realizations. Among others, the composer Antonín Dvořák is buried here.
